Non-Emergency Transportation Terms
Curb-to-curb service: This form of assistance references picking up patients at the curb of their residence and dropping them off at the curb of their appointment. Door-to-door service: This level of assistance takes it a step further, helping patients get out of their residence and inside of their destination. This service is intended for patients who require extra help, say for instance they are bed bound and require stretcher transportation.
Wheelchair/stretcher-capable vehicles: Not all vehicles are properly outfitted to transport wheelchairs and stretchers with utmost safety. NEMT vehicles are fully insured and comply with all safety standards set forth by the ADA, as well as federal, state, and local regulations. Some examples include patients who live in residential care centers such as nursing homes or assisted living. Patients in need of long-term care require regular and ongoing rides to doctor appointments and other obligations. NEMT transporters offer the highest level of care for long-term patients.
Acute healthcare: This NEMT service represents patients who need immediate care following a severe illness or disability. While appointments are highly recommended, NEMT services work hard to accommodate on-the-spot requests whenever possible. An example is if a patient receives treatment at one facility but then requires transportation to an in-patient center. Calling an NEMT is much more affordable than calling an ambulance.
