From long-term or chronic to acute care, NEMT services provide beneficial transportation services. If you or a loved one requires NEMT, there are some important terms to get familiar with.

Non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) provides an important service to a wide variety of patients. From seniors to bariatric patients to people recovering from surgery and in need of wheelchair transportation – we work with people from all walks of life. NEMT services are intended to accommodate conditions that traditional public transportation services cannot.

Non-Emergency Transportation Terms

Curb-to-curb service: This form of assistance references picking up patients at the curb of their residence and dropping them off at the curb of their appointment. Patients may receive help getting inside of the vehicle but are capable of getting in and out of their home and appointment without assistance.

Door-to-door service: This level of assistance takes it a step further, helping patients get out of their residence and inside of their destination. This service is intended for patients who require extra help, say for instance they are bed bound and require stretcher transportation.

Wheelchair/stretcher-capable vehicles: Not all vehicles are properly outfitted to transport wheelchairs and stretchers with utmost safety. NEMT vehicles are fully insured and comply with all safety standards set forth by the ADA, as well as federal, state, and local regulations. Our fleet is optimized for comfort and safety when it comes to wheelchair and stretcher transportation.

Field Service Representative (FSRs): This is an EMT title that signifies drivers who tend to patients on the way to a medical facility, or wherever their destination may be. FSRs are specially trained to tend to a variety of medical conditions, helping those with limited mobility or certain health conditions get from one location to another. FSRs undergo ADA training to better understand disabilities, senior sensitivity, service delivery requirements, and civil rights compliance. In addition, FSRs undergo adult/child CPR courses, training for Passenger Service and Safety, defensive driving courses, as well as background checks.

GPS-equipped vehicles: NEMT vehicles are outfitted with high-tech GPS so that drivers can be tracked and pinpointed at all times. This reduces the risk of everyone involved and helps locate patients as needed.

In addition, our vehicles are equipped with monitors that track speed to ensure drivers practice safe driving techniques at all times.

Bariatric Transportation: This form of transportation is for patients who are considered obese or weigh over 300 pounds and require stretcher or wheelchair transportation. Specialized equipment is required to safely and comfortably transport patients who fall within this category. Additional drivers may be needed to move bariatric patients who are not mobile.

Long-term healthcare: NEMT services often cater to patients who require long-term healthcare, which is defined as ongoing treatment for individuals who cannot care for themselves. Some examples include patients who live in residential care centers such as nursing homes or assisted living. Patients in need of long-term care require regular and ongoing rides to doctor appointments and other obligations. NEMT transporters offer the highest level of care for long-term patients.

Acute healthcare: This NEMT service represents patients who need immediate care following a severe illness or disability. While appointments are highly recommended, NEMT services work hard to accommodate on-the-spot requests whenever possible. An example is if a patient receives treatment at one facility but then requires transportation to an in-patient center. Calling an NEMT is much more affordable than calling an ambulance.

Chronic Care: This is care provided to patients with ongoing or long-term injuries or illnesses. Our NEMT service offers consistent transportation as needed, every day, several times a week, or a few times per month. Whatever the patient requires, we make it happen.
