Post-surgery bed rest can span days, weeks or months but just because you’re stuck in bed doesn’t mean you have to suffer in boredom.

Here are 12 ways to make the most out of your time on bed rest.

1. Brush Up On Classic Movies

Make a list of all the classic movies you’ve always wanted to see but never had the chance to watch. Check them off your list as you watch them.

2. Get Acquainted With New Music

Now is the chance to discover new music and fill up your iPod or other musical devices. iTunes, Spotify, Pandora and YouTube offer excellent libraries of music.

3. Start A Recovery Diary

Journal your recovery in a private diary or on a blog for the world to see, you never know your story could help others in the same position. It’s also rather therapeutic to write out your feelings both physically and mentally. Not to mention, it offers the perfect avenue to watch your progress unfold and keep track of important milestones in your recovery.

4. Start A Blog

Everyone wants to start a blog these days but few people actually have the time to set one up. Being on bed rest provides you with the perfect opportunity to start up that blog you’ve always wanted to write.

5. Read, Read & Read Some More

Books literally transport you to another world, far away from the confines of your bed. Read as many books as possible while you have the chance. A tablet reader may help you to read more books without having to rely on someone bringing you new books. If you’ve never been much into reading give audio books a try.

6. Play Board Games

Most board games require little to no movement and make for the perfect activity while on bed rest. Ask your guests to bring over board games or keep some stocked by your bed to play with people when they come by to visit. This gives you something exciting to do with guests that’ll keep you both from growing bored.

7. Play Video Games

Some adults still play video games but most leave the adrenaline rush of playing a good video game in their childhood days. Reawaken the video game playing beast within by setting up a system in your room. Even if video games have never been your thing, you might be surprised to discover the vast variety of options on the market—there’s literally something for every personality type and interest. If you’re just getting back in the game you don’t necessarily need the latest Play Station, and you can pick up older model gaming devices for pretty cheap.

8. Make Sure To Get Fresh Air

Unless you cannot leave your bed for any reason it’s so important to get outside for at least a few minutes every day. Have someone move you out to the porch, balcony or front yard so that you can take in the fresh air and sunshine. This is good for your mental and physical wellbeing and will aid in your overall recovery.

9. Reawaken The Art Of Handwritten Letters

Take the time to write letters to people you care about or maybe even people you’ve lost touch with. A handwritten letter means a lot but it’s something few people take the time to do anymore.

10. Organize Old Photos

Gather all of those old photos in boxes and bins and start organizing them into categorized albums. This is incredibly fun and transports you throughout different moments in time, before long you’ll forget you’re in bed altogether! Plus, you and your family will be so thankful you did this later on.

11. Find Discussion Boards Related To Your Condition

There are ample discussion boards online that you can find with a simple search of your condition or injury. This is an excellent way to connect with others going through the same exact thing.

12. Help Your Community Via Social Media

Just because you’re on bed rest doesn’t mean you can’t help out your community. Research organizations that help animals in your area and share pictures and stories on Facebook to help these animals find a new home.
